Student Life in Germany

German universities are ideal for people who are passionate about their studies and want to meet new people from all around the world. Students from various nationalities such as French, Portuguese, and Turkish can also find work in the country. In Germany, top universities provide quality education and are known for their scientific research. Students should also be able to impress their professors by working hard and being on time. Aside from having a great selection of universities, students also have the opportunity to travel to other countries and take up internships. They also have the chance to gain permanent residence in the country.

Free Education in Germany

Most of Germany's public universities offer education without charging any tuition fee. This applies to students from the European Union and also to international students. That means you can study at prestigious German universities for free. Well, this looks like a great deal. However, students need to pay a small ‘semester fee’ of around € 100 to € 350 each academic semester to pay for the student union and public transport ticket. Through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), scholarships are also available for international students. For instance, a scholarship program in the state of Baden-Württemberg offers up to 1,500 students annually.

Is there a language barrier?

It is a fact that you can survive in Germany with only English. But I suggest learning German to make your life easier. Learning the local language helps and it's very true for Germany. Most young people can communicate in English so you won't have much trouble with them but for workplaces apart from the IT field, the dominant language is German. Also learning German makes it easier to communicate well and get more job opportunities in general. From my personal experience in Germany, I would suggest at least learning till B1 level of German to make your transition smooth in Germany.

Part-time Jobs

Foreign students (who is not a citizen of an EU or EEA member state) studying in Germany, are allowed to work up to 120 days or 240 half days a year without the need to get permission from the country's employment authorities. On top of this students can not work more than 20 hours per week during their lecture period. This allows them to have plenty of time to study and work in Germany. Aside from working, foreign students are also allowed to participate in voluntary internship programs.

Here are some student jobs as an example

• Research assistant at University

• Library supervisor

• Cashier in a Cafe or Restaurant

• Organizer at Supermarket

• Waiter/Waitress

• Werk-Student in a company

Public Transport facilities

Due to its large public transportation system, Germany is well-known for providing fast and on-time public transportation. Students in most regions are also entitled to free public transportation by semester ticket during their semester. With a German student ID, you can save money while still enjoying travelling in the country. It will allow you to visit various local attractions for free or cheap.

Monthly cost for students

The average monthly cost of living in Germany is around 500 to 800 Euros per month. This includes housing, food, Phone bill, Health insurance, public transportation and other small costs. However, in more expensive cities, such as Frankfurt, Munich or Hamburg living costs can reach up to 1000 - 1500 Euros per month. Although most German universities provide student housing, the number of rooms is limited. Around 40% of international students prefer to live in student apartments in Germany due to the low prices of around 300 EUR (25,987 INR) per month. We will dig deeper into the monthly costs in various cities and parts of Germany in a separate post in the coming days.
